Overview

The project comprised the extension to an existing chalet bungalow by replacing the first floor with an all new timber framed first floor, with conventional floor to ceiling heights and new second floor within the roof pitch.

The accommodation at first floor includes two bedrooms, including a master bedroom with ensuite and dressing room, and family bathroom. At second floor there are two further bedrooms, one with ensuite. The ground floor has been extended to the rear providing an open plan family living space and kitchen, which takes advantage of the south facing garden and is protected from the noise of the High Street.

Features include mechanical ventilation with heat recovery providing constant pre heated filtered fresh air; high levels of air tight construction; very high levels of insulation keeping the house warm in winter and cool in summer. Heating and hot water is provided by an air source heat pump.

The outcome of this project illustrates how an old, cramped, cold and draughty bungalow can be given new life. It has been modernised, improved and extended in a highly sustainable manner, and without using large amounts of precious garden space.

The house has been built to a very high standard of construction following the Passivhaus principles. It has been designed to be ultra-low energy in use meaning that the clients are now less susceptible to volatility in the energy supply market. Additionally, occupant comfort levels are extremely good, with constant pre-heated, filtered fresh air being supplied to all rooms. Condensation and mould risks are eliminated also. This is good for the occupants but will also prolong the life of the house.

The building work took nine months to complete and was delivered to the client on time and within budget. The project was a regional winner in the LABC 2024 design awards.

“Phil and his team designed a house that we are thrilled to be living in. It amalgamates beautiful architecture with a welcoming family home. We gave him a difficult brief, on a tough site, in a conservation area and he delivered a sustainable house that is an asset to the high street”
