John Hampden Grammar School

Overview

This project provides an extension to the existing school dining hall and two new classrooms.  John Hampden Grammar school is a 5 form of entry selective Grammar School, which includes 6th form provision. The school has an Ofsted rating of ‘outstanding’ and is currently over-subscribed; a trend that appears to be increasing each academic year.

The school wishes to cater for this additional demand and continue to encourage more pupils to benefit from the high standard of education and well established nurturing environment.

The school currently has a capacity of 1260 students. However the existing dining provision caters for a much smaller number, resulting in cramped accommodation with some subsequent behavioural challenges and some students having to eat meals elsewhere, including outside.

The proposed dining hall extension will enable the school to accommodate students at lunch time in accordance with the recommendations of DfE BB103 (Area guidance for Schools) guidance.

To facilitate the dining hall expansion, two existing, adjacent, classrooms are required as well as the proposed extension. These need to be

re-provided to ensure sufficient teaching space for the existing students. It is proposed that two new classrooms are constructed on top of existing single storey accommodation to the rear of the school site.

The proposed extension to the dining hall is a mixture of glazing and masonry. The scale, rhythm and finish all take their cue from the recently completed Innovation Hub that the extension addresses. The proposed classroom extensions match the brick, roof tiles and fenestration of the adjoining two storey teaching block.

The project is currently at planning stage.
